Rules and Guidelines

-All school and band handbook rules apply at all times

-Show Band is a graded event.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances will be taken by a dedicated staff member.

-You represent the band program and Warren Township High School at all times. Act appropriately at all times. If there is any question about something you are about to do, don't do it!

-Follow the instructions of directors, school and marching band staff, and parent volunteers. Failure to do so will be treated as insubordination, and severe consequences will be given.

-Have all supplies needed to perform to the best of your ability on your instrument. This includes necessary repairs!

-Keep uniform in clean, odor-free condition

-Aim to be five minutes earlier than the report time

-Gum chewing is allowed only when instruments are not in hand. When instruments are involved, spit the gum out. No food or drink, with the exception of water, at all times during rehearsal.

-No phone calls or texting during active rehearsal.  Your phone will be confiscated until a parent picks it up if you choose to use your phone during rehearsal. If there is an emergency, tell a staff member before making or taking a call.

-Have your individual part at an extremely high level. The band is only as strong as its weakest player and marcher. A combination of several prepared and proficient band members = great success!!!

-Give as much effort as possible during rehearsals and performances.  The only thing in your actual control is your individual attitude, preparation, and involvement in the rehearsals and performances.  There will be times of frustration, and times when other's actions will attempt to bring you down. Tough it out, and be a model for those around you. Again, a combination of several positive band members = positive overall environment! It is what your make it!

Show Band - FAQ's For Incoming Freshmen

What exactly is the Warren Show Band? Who is in it?

The Warren Show Band is the second of two marching bands at Warren High School, the first being the Warren Competition Band. The Competition Band is made up of Symphonic Band I, Symphonic Band II, and select Concert Band I-Almond members.  The Show Band is made up of select Concert Band I-Almond and Concert Band II-Almond, all Concert Band I-O’Plaine, Concert Band II-O'Plaine, and Concert Band III members.

Is my child required to participate in the marching bands at Warren?

YES! If your child is in any of the Warren Bands, they are REQUIRED to participate in the marching bands as part of their grade. The band curriculum is all marching based for the first part of the school year.  Every concert band at Warren High School will do marching band related material until the end of the season.  Towards the middle of first semester (usually around late October), all band classes become concert band based.

What kind of performances will the Show Band participate in?

The Show Band will perform at all home football games, two community parades, an outdoor benefits concert, and a pep rally.

What kind of things will Show Band members learn?

Band members will learn a variety of skills in Show Band.  All members will learn a drum corps style of marching which is also used in the Competition Band. This will be done through marching basics, parade blocks, and field shows.  In addition to marching, students will play music while marching in all activities.  In addition to the previously mentioned activities, the Show Band will play numerous tunes in the stands during football games as well as school pep rallies.  Most importantly, being in the Show Band teaches leadership and teamwork skills that students can apply to real life situations.

Is it true that Show Band members get a P.E. Exemption for first semester?

YES! All Show Band members receive a Fall Semester P.E. Exemption for participating in Show Band!

What constitutes an excused absence from Show Band?

All Show Band members are required to be present at every camp, rehearsal, parade, and performance. An excused absence from Show Band includes serious illness, death in the family, and weddings.  Too much homework or work is NOT en excused absence from Show Band. Of course, there are other circumstances that will be considered at the director’s discretion. All excused absences must be cleared by me and I must at least one week in advance of the rehearsal or performance.

If my child is in another school activity, will participation in both activities be a problem?

NO! I talk to every student with a conflict on an individual basis.  Almost always, a solution can be worked out.  Do not be afraid to contact me or have your child come talk to me.  I am very understanding about other school activities, and will work for a solution.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me anytime!
