In addition to recognizing the Seniors in the Warren Township Marching Band Program, each year the marching bands of Warren, Woodland, and Viking perform for their parents and the Gurnee Community. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, this event became a way to help others in need. Therefore, we call it Fill the Drum. We ask those who are able, to donate at the gate the evening of the performance. We literally fill a drum with donations to send to a worthy cause. In the past, we have donated to the various cancer societies, the Iowa Flood Relief Fund, the Warren Food Pantry, and animal shelters.
After the devastation that Hurricane Harvey caused Texas, we connected with a high school band program from Kingwood, TX that lost almost everything to flood waters. Please take a few minutes and view the video of the damage to Kingwood High School.
Over 5 feet of water filled parts of KHS, and the water even reached the 2nd floor. Outdoor fields were covered in floodwater, the gymnasium floor destroyed, textbooks ruined and the Auditorium completely flooded. The music wing suffered the most damage including instruments and uniforms. The school is not opening to students this year. The 2,000 students from Kingwood will be bussed Summer Creek High School to receive their education. In addition to 5,000 students sharing a high school many Kingwood families who lost their homes have been taken in by families of Summer Creek students.
The band directors at Warren, Woodland and Viking try to instill in our band students here in Gurnee that band is family. Whether it is in our own schools, across town, across the state, or across the country, band is one huge family.
Our directors are in contact with the KHS band directors. Let’s show our Kingwood Texas band family that we are here to help. Once again, the Gurnee Band Community filled the drum on the evening of September 13, 2017. The WTHS Band Boosters will be sending a check to the Kingwood High School Band program totaling over $6,000.
